Travel report – ERASMUS week in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal (May 3-9, 2026)

The visit in Portugal was the last mobility of the year. We had previously hosted our partner schools in November 2025 and, in the course of the year, visited first Italy, and then Romania. The mobility in Portugal was surely a great way to finish the project.

On May 3 we visited the Portuguese pupils’ school. First, we gathered in the library, where the teachers presented the programme for the week. We also received ceramic magnets from a popular Portuguese shop, since Portugal is known for its ceramic artworks. Afterwards, the pupils guided us through the school in groups, showing us the physics and IT classrooms, the chemistry laboratory, and the gyms, which looked very different from ours in Vienna. Later, we returned to the library and were divided into international groups. Using a map and leaflet, we searched for statues by the famous ceramics artist Bordallo around Caldas da Rainha and took creative pictures with them. We uploaded the photos to Padlet, where the teachers chose their favorite and awarded group 3 the prize. In the afternoon we had free time, and most of us went to the beach to play volleyball and relax.

On Tuesday morning we visited Nazaré, where we enjoyed the view and took pictures. Afterwards, we travelled by bus to São Martinho do Porto for lunch and some free time at the beach, where we played volleyball in the cold ocean. Later, we went to the Bay of Óbidos, where we could canoe. In the evening we visited a shopping mall, where some of us tried açaí for the first time. The Portuguese students also showed us a beautiful nearby park with wild peacocks before we returned home to rest for the next day.

On Wednesday we had a guided tour through Óbidos and learned about its history before exploring the village ourselves. Afterwards, we took part in the Ocean Patrol workshop and cleaned the beach, which taught us just how much human trash ends up in the ocean. We spent our lunch break with our hosts at the beach before travelling to another beach for surfing lessons. Professional instructors guided us, and even non-swimmers could participate. In the evening, we attended a well-organized Erasmus+ party together with participants from previous years, which was a great reunion and a fun way to spend time together.

On Thursday we travelled to Lisbon. After arriving, we tried to solve a treasure hunt, which led us to the city’s most important sights and ended at the castle. Afterwards, we had free time for lunch and souvenirs before visiting the aquarium for a guided tour, where we learned many new things about the ocean and its inhabitants. In the evening we returned to Caldas da Rainha after a long but exciting day.

On Friday morning we met at school to create an e-book with pictures and short texts about the week. During a short break we planted a tree together, then finished the e-book and had lunch at school. Afterwards, we said goodbye to the Romanian students, and later most of us met at the mall to have a farewell dinner together.
